Colegio Amigos
History
Established over 10 years ago, the school is located 49 miles from the city of Guatemala, Central America, in a small community called “La Vega.”
Mercedes and Maria Luisa Tum immigrated from this small community and were working hard to provide the necessities for their family and community. Through Mercedes, Consuelo McCullough- a teacher and parent of children attending West Valley Christian School- began a small project with parents, teachers, and students. What started as a small club named “Club Amigos Por Siempre” with 50 children grew to serve 250 children in the community. For many years, donations made by the parents, teachers, and students of West Valley Christian School children in La Vega were blessed.
Years later, Mr. Foy McCullough- Consuelo’s father- saw the need and decided to support the creation of a school in this community. He supported the establishment of “Colegio Amigos Por Siempre” which provides kids in the community the opportunity to complete 7th-9th grade. What began as a small project is now in its 10th year as a school with an average enrollment of 51 students each year.
Today, the school continues to provide education, services, and hope to the children and families in the surrounding areas. Colegio Amigos Por Siempre-Los Abuelitos continues to be solely funded by Mr. Mc Cullough’s widow and the Tum family continues to provide administrative, educational, and capacity-building support for the school.
